There's no such thing as 'the cloud'. It's just someone else's servers
rather than your own. If you want to store all your private / sensitive
stuff and business plans on someone else's machines, be my guest, but don't
be surprised if they are always one up on you.

Nevertheless, there's no cloud - just other people's servers instead of your
own (and other people's backdoors to your data as well). In other words,
your living like business and investors did on the November 22, 1929. A day
or two later they were jumping off ledges.

What they are saying and what is real can be two entirely different things.
There is no cloud, -hello- .

He grasps it just fine. It's you who can't see through the "cloud" to
the actual technology behind it.

Yes, we do care, Because when the data is on my machine, I only have
to worry about security in one physical location. If it's on someone
else's server, it's transitioning th network, it's stored on someone
else's server, it's in someone else's physical location - the possible
holes grow exponentially.

All MS cares about is getting to where they can LEASE you software by
the minute and prevent illegal copying. It was nothing to do with
advancing technology, it has to do with profit. Wake up and smell the
coffee.

In my humble opinion, I think that it's a right assumption for companies and
individuals to concern about their sensitive data.

It's not uncommon for companies to restrict employees from accessing to
Internet or installing/removing software and hardware devices (e.g. USB
memory sticks), so putting sensitive data to a 3rd party service provider,
even like IBM's data centers, may arise even more concerns

The concept and technology might also be possible for an Intranet
environment (thinking the world as a one big Intranet environment for
multinationals) and "others" could be branches, operation centers,
facilities, etc. located at different continents/countries, and doesn't have
to be a 3rd party service provider.

I am not sure where cloud computing will be heading to, just that we don't
need to limit our minds to apply concepts and technologies

Security will have to get a lot better than it is now. Data centers have
been hacked recently, compromising many, many, people's personal data.
Some have been inside jobs, some haven't. What's worse, YOUR/OUR
personal data is being put on loosely secured external, (Cloud if you
will), servers, WITHOUT any regard to YOUR/OUR wishes. We are ALL
vulnerable right now, period.
No, I don't see "Cloud" computing being universally adopted any time
soon, without super strict, tight, failsafe, security. ..Which so far,
has been proven NOT to be the case.

G'day

Not just secure, but with a strong backup and recovery strategy. No
good entrusting ones data to a secure "cloud" system if that system has
no robust backup strategy in place.

Security will remain as the foremost important consideration for serious
business (or even individuals) to deploying new technologies.

Even with a strong or world-class backup/recovery strategy, as pointed out
by Jane C., it's only good for restoring lost/damaged data but can't never
compensate the loss of misused data. So, security will be the first issue
to address.

At the same time, I also believe that there are many intelligent and
experienced professionals in all functional fields who would strive to come
out a better solution. So, I would let them do their job.

As for me, I always like new concepts, models, and technologies, so I will
be cautiously optimistic.
