I had the same problem on an hp laptop (HDX 16) running Vista 64 Ultimate.
It turned out to be a Windows Update (KB972036) that was released a couple
of days ago. Try pressing F12 during the boot process

This update installed automatically on my machine as it is a "Recommended
update" and crashed my machine. It went into a perpetual boot loop that
involved a blue screen. It took me about one hour to recover and I did so
by running "Startup Repair" which can be run from the Window Vista CD.
Apparently startup repair is also installed on Vista machines and can be run
by pressing the F12 key during the boot process on "broken Vista installs"
(at least that is how I got it to run). Startup repair went to work
repairing my windows install.

Apparently from newsgroup posting and one article I found, I am not the only
one that experiencing this problem.

Article with replies documenting that other are also having problems.

Hope this helps.
