Non-sequitor, though I note you're using Pan. A lot of
people use Linux but post using Windows. A few work with
Windows but advocate and post using Linux.
It appears that Pan *can* be built using MingW:

and of course SLRN is buildable in multiple environments;
presumably Cygwin is among them. Personally, I think such
efforts potentially useful curiosities.
As for SATA...not that familiar with it. There is a
homepage (
http://linux-ata.org/) which might be of some
assistance. Apparently Linux SATA is still a work in
progress, though the website Wiki claims that the "ATA
host state machine", the core of the entire driver,
is production-stable.
I'll admit I don't know how to characterize drive problems,
though; ideally, errors on single drives would be detected
and worked around very quickly, unless a cable falls out
or something.
