See thread by Dave Hawley recently concluded.

<Title>Windows 2000 SP4 Update Rollup 'Sticking' in Windows Update</TITLE>

http://www.microsoft.com/communities...=US&sloc=en-us

Dave mentioned that the problem seemed to be caused by
<quote>
....two components of Windows were out of date.
These were MS Data Access Components 2.8,
which needed to be upgraded to SP1, and MSXML 4.0,
which needed to be upgraded to SP2.
</quote>

In that case besides the MBSA 2.1 tool which Dave mentions
there are specific checker programs for both components:

<title>KB301202 - How to check for MDAC version</title>

<title>KB278674 - Determine the Version of MSXML Parser Installed on a Computer</title>

They may be useful in reducing the complexity of the analysis
needed to do version checking for the rollup. Unfortunately
a full list of the modules' versions installed by the rollup has not
been published nor are there any tools apparent which expose
the logic that the update uses when doing its checking.

Robert. Thanks for the pointers. I ended up downloading and instaling Microsoft Data Access Component v.2.8 from http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/d...DisplayLang=en which solved the problem.
