I assume you're pointing me at Outlook posts. I'm talking about Windows

[crosspost to Vista Mail newsgroup]
Well, you cited "Office 2007" in your subject and you didn't mention Windows Mail in your first post so my CrystalBall© thought you were referring to Outlook 2007. Moving on... WinMail: Tools | Options | Security | Block images... <=if you disable/uncheck this option, does the behavior persist? What anti-virus application or security suite is installed, is your subscription current, and is it supported in IE8? What anti-spyware applications (other than Defender)? What third-party firewall (if any)? Were any of these applications running in the background when you installed IE8? Has a Norton or McAfee application ever been installed on this machine (e.g., a free-trial version that came preinstalled when you bought it)? Did you use a Restore Point that predated the install of IE8? If you did, that was a big ol' no-no. See http://bertk.mvps.org/html/tips.html#5 (applies to Vista, too). -- ~PA Bear TooLate wrote: > I assume you're pointing me at Outlook posts. I'm talking about Windows > Mail, not Outlook. I did a Windows Update that downloaded IE8 and "Office Suite 2007 SP2" in the
same session. I have not restored since doing that, and since then there has been a Windows Vista SP2 automatic update and an IE8 Update as well, so it might be impossible to untangle exactly what caused this problem. My reference to past identical problems and restores was to actions well before any of the current iteration of this Mail behavior, after minor security updates. (1) Images were not blocked. (2) Security suite is Trend Micro PC-cillin Internet Security 14, with automatic updates daily. That includes all malware detection and firewall. They were running when Windows Update ran. I've never had a virus or spyware on my machine. (3) No, Norton and McAfee (a pox on them) have never been installed on this year-and-a- half old laptop and, in fact, I had Dell deliver this PC with NO trial apps. (4) Lastly, no, I haven't had to do a restore for months and haven't done one since these downloads. As I said, I was very hesitant, apparently with good reason based on your comment. Here's the good news: Now Mail attachments are working. Trend Micro did an automatic update to Virus Patterns at 4:16 this mornimg. Perhaps IE6/TMPCcillin aren't on the best of terms? Anyway, I wish I had a definitive answer, but lacking that, and working again, I do appreciate your efforts to help me solve the mystery. Thanks, PA Bear. My bad - typo, should read IE8, not 6 - I did nothing to change the situation
or back out anything. What would have been the alternative to using Windows Update to download IE8? I gather you're also saying NOT to run automatic Windows updates.(?). Thank you very much!
I find it very interesting that a Trend Micro update (an engine update, I assume) resolved the problem and that you did not have to resort to uninstalling IE8, as is so frequently recommended by some in Vista Mail newsgroup. This resolution very strongly suggests that IE8 itself was not the cause of the problem to begin with, and that all Trend Micro applications should be IE8-compatible now (which has not been the case since IE8 was released on 19 March 2009). Again, my thanks for your follow-up. -- ~Robear Dyer (PA Bear) MS MVP-IE, Mail, Security, Windows Client - since 2002 TooLate wrote: > IE8 > > "PA Bear [MS MVP]" wrote: >> Repost: Are you now running IE7 or IE8? >> >> TooLate wrote: >>> My bad - typo, should read IE8, not 6 - I did nothing to change the >>> situation or back out anything.
