[ X-post to WU newsgroup. This thread in archive: http://snipurl.com/17pqi ]
Helen, what "security" applications are installed and running in the background (e.g., anti-virus, internet security suite, anti-spyware)? In an earlier post to this newsgroup, you stated that you were running Norton Internet Security 2006: http://snipurl.com/17pqs.) If you're using a third-party firewall, what is it and what is its version (e.g., ZA Free or Pro 6.5.xxx)? These installations are logged in a file named "windowsupdate.log" (usually C:\Windows\windowsupdate.log). Check that log for errors associated with the install of these updates, Helen. How to read the Windowsupdate.log file: http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=902093 Compare errors to those listed here: http://inetexplorer.mvps.org/archive...date_codes.htm and/or go to http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com > click on Help and Support link in left pane > Solve problems on your own. More assistance: => Customers in the U.S. and Canada can receive technical support from Microsoft Product Support Services at 1-866-PCSAFETY. There is no charge for support calls that are associated with security updates. => International customers can receive support from their local Microsoft subsidiaries. There is no charge for support that is associated with security updates. For more information about how to contact Microsoft for support issues, visit the International Support Web site. I'm running NIS2007 and their firewall. I think I only have NIS running in
the background. I did turn off email scanning though. I'll follow your instructions later and get back to you. I hope I find the problem soon. Thanks. This may have changed with a recent LiveUpdate but AFAIK no Norton
application is supported in IE7 yet, Helen. NAV's "protections" might be interfering here. (Note that disabling NAV does NOT disable the protections!) Should I just keep downloading these updates when they appear or should I

No, I wouldn't hide them, I'd find out what's wrong!
What does windowsupdate.log have to say about the repeated installs of these updates? Any errors? Have you contacted Product Support Services? Their support is free as long as you don't ask any questions unrelated to installing Windows Updates. If they ask for a credit card before they'll assist you, tell 'em you KNOW support for Windows Update issues is free and demand to speak to a supervisor or Level 2 Tech. -- ~PA Bear Helen Arnoldus wrote: > Should I just keep downloading these updates when they appear or should I > "hide" them? > > "PA Bear" <> wrote in message > news:... >> This may have changed with a recent LiveUpdate but AFAIK no Norton >> application is supported in IE7 yet, Helen. >> >> NAV's "protections" might be interfering here. I opened windowsupdate.log, but I really don't know what to look for. I
didn't see any errors. I did see that the 2 updates were installed successfully. When I went into C:\Windows and to KB890531 and KB921398.logs, I found some errors. In Aug. 921398 "setup encountered an error: The update.ver file is not correct". "KB921398 installation did not complete". Apr. 15, Apr. 25 & 1/16/2007 - KB908531 "setup encountered an error: The update.ver file is not correct". Apr. 25 "KB908531 installation did not complete". I went into a few other KB logs and some of them also had these same messages and these updates appear to be OK. So I don't know if this means anything. I really don't know how to read these logs. Earlier tonight I posted on the MS Discussions in Windows Update site and
found my posts to you. I wasn't aware the same posts appeared on that site too. I noticed on those discussions, other people are having the same problem but with different updates. I'm glad it's not only me, but would like to have this fixed like everyone else. news: .... > Should I just keep downloading these updates when they appear > or should I "hide" them? What do you want to do? Try some diagnosis? http://www.microsoft.com/technet/sec.../ms06-015.mspx Take the list of modules in the Security Bulletin and see if they are still the ones which you have in your System32 and DllCache directories. Check the size and timestamp as well as the version (in order to check if you are getting the SP2GDR or the SP2QFE versions). Or use the MBSA to see what it thinks. Details in the section of the bulletin titled: Verifying that the update has been applied. Hint: expand the sections [-] Security Update Information [-] Windows XP (all versions) Also, if you are going to reinstall it manually again you could try adding the /verbose switch to the command line and then looking at the resulting logs. Good luck Robert Aldwinckle --- |

You're posting to the newsgroups, not me. I began a crosspost of this
thread to Windows Update newsgroup in a reply of mine on 17 Jan-07. I'm afraid no one here can fix it for you, Helen. See the suggestions I've already posted (yes, you'll have to do some work and learn some stuff <wink>), and please consider calling Product Support Services (PSS): => Customers in the U.S. and Canada can receive technical support from Microsoft Product Support Services at 1-866-PCSAFETY. There is no charge for support calls that are associated with security updates. => International customers can receive support from their local Microsoft subsidiaries. There is no charge for support that is associated with security updates. For more information about how to contact Microsoft for support issues, visit the International Support Web site. -- ~PA Bear Helen Arnoldus wrote: > Earlier tonight I posted on the MS Discussions in Windows Update site and > found my posts to you.
