Either you need to change Windows Updates settings to suit *your* needs or
change the way the Windows Update icon is displayed in the Notification Area.
Click the Start orb > Control Panel > Windows Updates
Click the 'Change settings' link in the left frame.
Under Improtant updates click the drop down arrow.
Set it to 'Download updates but let me choose when to install them' or
'Check for updates but let *me* choose whether to download or install them'
Then click the OK button at the bottom of the window.
Alternatively, you can set the Windows Update icon notification to show the
icon and the notification bubble that should pop up when the system detectes
updates need to be downloaded. I say should because although the WU icon is
set to that on my Win7 system, I fail to even notice that updates have been
detected.
Which is why I suggest setting WU to allow *you* to decide when to
download/and or install updates.
