I'm wondering if you aren't seeing an erroneous error message
for a different reason.

Your OS is XPsp2 which natively does not contain MSJava.
Therefore, I think that you would not be able to install that patch
unless you already have a version of MSJava to update.

Let's check for that case. Try to Run... wjview and tell us your results.

If you don't have wjview (or the jview command line tool)
you probably don't have MSJava at all, in which case any
error code might be used in place of whatever message
a manual installer would receive to tell them that the update
could not be used.

Thank you for your reply. Running WJView shows that I have MVM version
5.00.3805 installed.

Since my last post on the issue I have now had another update fail with the
same error. So here's the summary of what has worked and what hasn't.
Please keep in mind there have been no changes to our local network
configuration recently and the VM update that failed to download orginally
failed in the same update session where the other updates succeeded.

Successfull:

..Net Framework 1.1 SP1
Matrox G450 Driver Update
KB831240
..Net Framework 1.1
WinXP Journal Viewer

Failed:

816093
KB836528

I'm still looking for a way to update the Microsoft VM. Any further help
would be appreciated.

That's good then. Have you tried downloading 816093 and
installing it manually? (assuming your primary objective is getting
the fix installed?) If there is still a difficulty installing it you may
get better diagnostics that way.

Good luck

Thank you, that has updated the MS VM. I still have an issue with one update
that won't download from the Windows Update site (the worm removal tool) but
as it is not an update that I need I'll leave that as a problem for another
day.
