I purchased WinXP Professional (pre SP1) when it first came out. Can it be
re-installed? Or, will I need to purchase a WinXP Pro SP2 install disk?

Can it be used to freshly install your Windows XP on the same computer or a
new computer?
Sure.

It cannot be transferred (according to the EULA you agreed to every time you
used it) *if* it was an OEM copy.
It can be transferred to a new PC (according to the EULA you agreed to every
time you used it) *if* it was a retail copy.

You can even integrate SP2 and almost all post-sp2 patches directly into the
installation and burn a new CD - so that when you use the CD you made with
your Product Key - you will be as up-to-date as the patches you integrated
into the CD itself (less work in downloading SP2 and the 70+ patches after
that if you reinstall more than once...)

Google for "Autostreamer" and/or "NLite". These applications were made to
do the bulk of the work for you.
