I have this exact problem. My laptop was doing weird things, so I decided to
format the main windows partition. Ran the restore cd (xp home oem with sp2
- came pre-installed with lappy), everything came back up just great. The
very first thing I did is go to windows update and proceeded to run the
update using the "express" version. It had this problem and was unable to
complete the initial update (that included IE7).

Having decided to start again, I re-formated the C partition and again
proceeded to go to the windows update page. This time going the "custom"
installation route, I excluded IE7, guessing maybe a bug there. The result
being the same. This was a week ago and I am still stuck at the exact same
place whenever I go to windows update.

It would be nice for microsoft to actually come up with a bug free os (or at
least one that has less issues than xp), I'm not holding my breath for vista
though.

This is not the first time I have formated this partition or used the
restore cd. No problems in the past. I did not touch the hidden partition
that came with the laptop, am running xp home oem AMD64 ML-34 with 1 gig of
ram and plenty of HD space.

If anyone has been able to fix this, or has any suggestions, a response
would be greatly appreciated. Until then, I am learning more about Ubuntu.

Thanks in advance

Have you tried this suggestion?
http://groups.google.com/group/micro...a44095a0f46e86
if link broken try
http://snipurl.com/14p9u

Have you looked at the detail in the WindowsUpdate.log located in your
Windows folder?

Hope this helps.

Apparently I was writing my post same time as yours.

I have tried your suggestion and yes it worked just fine. Thank you very
much!!
I only had to run the first command (regsvr32 MSXML3.DLL), re-booted (not
sure if I had to or not) but that did it. I did come across another issue
with not being able to install flash player update, but was easily able to
find the fix on this forum also.

Thanks again.
