What did they say? It's very difficult to be sure without your
answering that question, but my very strong guess is that you are
infected with malware.

You probably don't need me to tell you this, but being delinquent in
doing backups is simply looking for trouble.If you have files that are
important to you, backing them up on a regular basis is extremely
important.

Since without more information, I can't be sure what you your problem
is, but you need to be aware of the possibility that they *are* lost.

Remove the drive from the computer, install it in another computer,
and try to read and copy your important files there. Whether or not
that works depends on what your malware infection is and what it has
done to your drive
