Note (1): After reading all I can find about this "patch" and concluding
that the vulnerability is probably limited to OE and Outlook (neither of
which I use) I've just tried using CP -> Add/Remove programs to get rid of
it.

This uninstall utility deleted the registry entry that autobooted
Kb891711.exe, but failed to delete the program, the accompanying DLL, or the
Kb891711 folder from \Windows\System.

Note (2): Several posts added by subscribers of
microsoft.public.windowsupdate to this thread, and addressed to
wanadoouk.help.windows.misc,microsoft.public.windo wsupdate
have failed to appear on the Wanadoo NNTP (news) server -
(news.wanadoo.co.uk).

This cockup has occurred because of a silly corporate branding exercise that
caused Wanadoo to block posts to their existing 'freeserve.*' newsgroups -
which were available on most servers worldwide - and to create a set of
'wanadoouk.*' equivalents. Apparently they make posts to these groups
available for propagation, but decided not to 'newgroup' them.

Thanks a bundle, Wanadoo.

You tried to uninstall it while it was running. Testing I have done shows
that running uninstall without stopping Kb91711 from running does remove the
registry entries, but leaves the program files in the folder. Running
uninstall after stopping Kb891711 allows uninstall to remove the program
files from the folder, as well as the registry entries.

Chris:

(1) is it you or your news server that keeps removing
microsoft.public.windowsupdate from your 'newsgroups:' header?

(2) You are replying to another post that has failed to reach the Wanadoo
news server. Google Groups tells me that the full reply was:

(In reply to Norman Miller

I did what MS would expect the ordinary naive user to do were he to choose
to uninstall.

One gets the feeling that MS must have put just about all their competent
coders to work on Longhorn, and that morale amongst those tasked with
maintaining earlier versions of Windows must now be very low.

Are there any *maintaining* earlier versions?
