Testing Update:
1) Uninstalling the KB941600 USB stability fix via 'Uninstall
program' in Control Panel then re-running sfc /scannow *still* result
in corrupt files being reported.
2) Running sfc /scannow from Safe Mode produces similar results.
3) Running SFC from the Vista dvd reports no problems. I booted Vist
Ultimate from the installation dvd, opened a Command screen from th
Repair menu, then ran the following:
x:\>sfc /scannow /offbootdir= c: /offwindir=c:\windows
This ran and terminated normally with the message:
-Windows Resource Protection did not find any integrity violations.
-I'vetried disabling my AVG virus checker. This makes no difference.
Observations:
Test 1: Uninstalling KB941600 clearly did not return the system to it
previous error-free state. Does this mean that KB941600 is a re
herring? With a stream of updates, the complication of possible use
initiated system restores to earlier dates, power failures at critica
moments, buggy updates and application installations, viruses etc.,
maybe version control and version roll-back can get quite complicated.
Maybe that's why we have SFC.
Test 2 suggests that it is not a rogue driver issue.
Test 3: ???? SFC corrupt?
When unfixed corrupted files are reported, why is "-Verification 99
complete-"? Why not 100%?
Why does SFC report errors yet no errors can be found in cbs.log?
Why did SFC produce a BSOD on the second occasion I ran it when th
problem first became apparent
