As I'm sure you're aware, there's all sorts of options, depending on if you want Peer to
Peer, encryption, collaboration features, and if you're prepared to pay.

Microsoft-wise there's Office Communications Server coupled with the Office Communicator
which is a very nice solution. However, it's probably overkill for what you're trying to do
and certainly isn't free.

Another option of course is to setup a Jabber server and use your choice of Jabber clients
(of which there are plenty).
