Try going to Start menu > Control Panel > System. Select the Hardware tab.
Click Device Manager (button). Look through the list of devices for the one
that has the problem (it may have a yellow exclamation mark symbol with to
it indicating a problem with the device, or it may not). Right-click the
device icon and select Properties, click "Drivers" tab, click "Roll back
driver" button. This should restore a copy of the previous driver for that
device only.
I don't know if turning off System Restore also prevents the system keeping
a back-up of old drivers. Is there a reason for turning off System Restore?
If it is to save disk space you can limit the amount of disk space System
Restore uses using the System Restore tab on the System Control Panel applet
(click the "Settings" button and move the slider). It's not a good idea to
turn off System Restore completely as it is inevitable there will be a
Windows problem you can't fix any other way.
