This is what comes of using MSCONFIG to eliminate programs that start
automatically..

Go to each program and see if there is something in preferences/options that
will stop the action..

How can a feature that is a checkbox in the top, center of a window that
says "Show Updates" not be considered "documented"? Undocumented settings
are config files and registry entries where you have to create a new line or
entry that doesn't previoulsy exist. In addition, this is documented in some
of the SP2 specific documentation released with SP2.

As for the msconfig issue, we haven't heard about that.

otherwise, if you have specific issues, contact PSS:

I am also experiencing major sluggishness after installing the February
Security release. While I am not blaming this update, it is the only
change made to my system right before this issue popped up.

I have done a restore to a point that I thought was right before the
install of the latest security patch, and this restored things to
almost the same performance level, but not 100%.

Is there anyway to restore my system 100% to the point prior to the Feb
Security Update? Thanks!

You are missing more than one point here.. you do NOT use MSCONFIG in
selective startup mode to eliminate programs that start up automatically..

Re. showing updates, there is a checbox at the top of ADD/REMOVE..

In the case of start-up items, it is better to go to each individual program
and turn it off.. msconfig allows for start-up items to be temporarily
stopped such that diagnosis of problems associated to any of them can be
isolated..

The problem with taking items directly out of start-up is that the majority
of users do not know what they are removing, and can and do cause more
problems by inadvertently disabling firewalls et al..

I am a newbie and since the 10 updates, the Paint program opens when I
turn on the computer. I have never touched msconfig, don't even know
where it is, and can find nowhere in the Paint program to turn it off or
stop it from starting up. I don't want to restore because then I will
have to face all those updates again. My husband says just uninstall it
and get it out of here. Perhaps it would be better for me to install
updates one at a time and turn off this automatic business.

Sometimes, things happen all at the same time.. it could just be
co-incidence that Paint is doing this.. if it was a global problem, then
Paint would be opening at start-up for me, but it isn't.. my computers are
working just as they were prior to updates, and show no signs of anything
going awry..

I would suggest that you uninstall Paint, and then re-install it, assuming
that you ever use the program..

Thank you, Mike. Have done that and all is running fine now. We have
never used Paint anyway.
