It is definitely the latest IE patch - the others are OK. Forgot to write
the KB number down though.

Assuming it is the IE cumulative update then?

You can get any month's release of patches from Microsoft by knowing the
year and month..

http://www.microsoft.com/technet/sec.../ms##-***.mspx

## - replaced with two digit year..
*** - replaced with three character abbreviation of month

So June 2006 patches (after the second tuesday passes for June):
http://www.microsoft.com/technet/sec.../ms06-jun.mspx

Looking at the 8 critical patches and reading into this thread - it would
seem the one troubling you is:

Microsoft Security Bulletin MS06-021
http://www.microsoft.com/technet/sec.../MS06-021.mspx

Cumulative Security Update for Internet Explorer (916281)
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/916281

For which there are "Known Issues" listed in the first link given. You may
want to read that link - especially the known issues part - and make
appropriate corrections as directed there before installing that patch
again.
