The problem isn't the update but real-time protections provided by your third-party security applications (i.e., anti-virus & add-ons; security suite & add-ons; anti-spyware app & add-ons; firewall) which are disallowing the changes being made by the update. Try the following variation: 1. If you're running ZA Free, temporarily uninstall it then enable the Windows Firewall before proceeding below. 2. Reboot into Safe Mode, uninstall 939653 via Add/Remove Programs again, then reboot into normal (Windows) mode. Assuming the problems do NOT persist now, proceed to Steps #3 - #6: 3. Download the update from the following Vista x86-specific link, saving the download to your desktop: http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/d...3-699CDB9375AE 4. Reboot into Safe Mode. 5. Double-click on the saved download (Windows6.0-KB939653-x86.msu) to install it. 6. I followed your instructions until I tried to install KB931678 in safe mode. I received "error 0x8007043C This service cannot be started in Safe Mode." Very strange. So I rebooted in real time, took the PC off the Internet, disabled all protection from Computer Associates. (I am using it because it was a free offer from ISP. Hard to beat free.) Installed KB931678 and restarted. Then reinstalled all protection before going back to the net. I guess we shall see what happens. If I still have trouble, will try your other suggestions. If you're running a *free-trial* version of the CA security suite that came preinstalled on the machine, understand that the free-trial period DOES and WILL (and may have) expired. I have the same problem, and I also use CA Internet Security Suite but on a
Gateway computer. The problem does not exist with XP. I can work online for a couple of hours before I get the "webpage cannot be displayed" message. With Vista, Firefox crashes frequently for me (Microsoft conspiracy); so lately I've been using IE7. However, when IE cannot connect to the internet, Firefox cannot connect either. Interestingly enough, the connection is still there because I can successfully "ping" addresses from the command prompt. So, it appears to me that CA is creating the problem, because it just couldn't possibly be something wrong with Vista. The initial problem noted here sounds suspiciously like what is happening to
my computer (and has stumped Dell Support even after approx 6 hours on teh phone with them - as well as an hour with my ISP Tech Support). However, my OS is Windows ME. Does anyone know the best way of handling the lost internet connection for ME? In a nutshell - after about ten minutes online, if I try to move websites, open a new window for a website, or even refresh current screen, I get a Page Cannot Be Displayed message. Pinging shows that I am still connected but I cannot view anything. In addition, I had recently tried downloading IE Service Pack 6 (I am running IE 5.5 series) as it was noted as a Critical Update when I ran Windows Update, and keep getting a message that it cannot be installed as not all components are available/downloaded. I am told to restart and the download/installation process starts again, but never completes. I also have tried downloading the other "critical update" that Windows Update notes for me, which is KB888113, this appears to download and install correctly but then each time I go back to Windows Update, I'm told that I need to install it...
