With the help of a friend I finally found a solution to the problem of the
missing optical drives. He pointed me to
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/320553 which is a Knowledge Base discussion
of this problem. as well as to a script for doing the needed editing on the
registry:
http://www.kellys-korner-xp.com/regs...cd_dvd_fix.vbs
After running the script and rebooting the machine, the DVD drives were back!
