This is a FAQ but it helps not to make typos when you need to enter
your search criteria. <eg>
FYI the prefix of the hex code you are getting is usually 0x
however it may also be written without the prefix, particularly
when it contains alphabetic characters (i.e., when there is no
accidental mistaking it for a decimal value.)
Also, in order to filter out only discussions which are likely to contain
helpful answers you can hope that one of the participants was either
a Microsoft employee or an MVP and that they sign themselves as
MSFT or MVP, respectively.
Taking all those factors and putting them into one search expression
for a Google Groups search we get, e.g.:
80072EFD OR 0X80072EFD MSFT OR MVP group:microsoft.*

For this particular result I further refined it with the Advanced search
to limit it to only discussions from English newsgroups, only within the
last year, and ordered by date (in case there has been a change of
thought about an issue--relevance might highlight too much of the
(interesting) speculative discussions when a problem is first seen,
rather than the latest refinements after it is better understood.)
