"Heather Preston",

I apologize that you are hitting this issue. While "logged in" to your
Windows 98 computer, please:

1. Open an Internet Explorer browswer and go here:
http://v4.windowsupdate.microsoft.com/en/default.asp
2. When this opens, look on the left hand side for "Windows Update Catalog"
3. Click on "Find updates for Microsoft Windows operating systems"
4. Use the pull down menu to select "Windows 98 and Windows 98 Second
Edition"
5. Select the appropriate language
6. Click on the "Advanced search options"
7. In the field "Contains these words:" put the NNNNNN of the KB article you
were referring to. So in this case, the KB is 891781, so put in 891781.
8. Click the Search button.
9. Follow the prompts, and you will find the critical update and can
download it!

Reply back and let us know how this goes!

Sincerely,

Pat Walters [MSFT]

Why is it when I click >
http://v4.windowsupdate.microsoft.com/en/default.asp I get
v5.windowsupdate.microsft.com/v5Consumer
/thanksaspx?2in

Plus,
Thank you for your interest in Windows Update

Windows Update is the online extension of Microsoft Windows that helps you
get the most out of your computer.

You must be running a Microsoft Windows operating system in order to use
Windows Update. If you are looking for updates to Microsoft products for
Macintosh operating systems, please visit http://www.microsoft.com/mac/.

"Stan",

Very likely, you are running into this issue because you are attempting to
access the v4 website using Windows XP, and hitting an error after you are
correctly redirected to the v5 website. Please reply back to this newsgroup
with the error you are actually encountering in the log. Here's how:

On Windows XP:

1. Click Start
2. Click Run
3. type: %WINDIR%\WindowsUpdate.log
4. Click OK
5. Next, when the log has opened, scroll all the way to the bottom.
6. Ensure this is the case by clicking anywhere inside the log and typing
the <CTRL> and <End> keys.
7. Now that you are at the bottom of the log, type <CTRL> then the <F> key
for Find.
8. When the Find window opens, in Direction click the "Up" radio button.
9. Still in the Find window, in the Find what: field, type in 0x and then
click the Find Next button.
10. You will find the very latest error, usually in a format such as
0x800732EF or 0xFFFFFB40.
11. Copy the whole line this code is on, and perhaps a few others around it,
to let us understand the context.
12. Reply to this thread in this newsgroup, and paste the text you copied
from the log.
13. Also tell us what update you were installing, if you got that far.

Sincerely,

Pat Walters [MSFT]

Pat Walters,
Here are results of your suggestions regarding the condition on my computer.
Not trying to install an update, however Aupdate does function as I have
received some a couple days ago.
Hope you can come up with a resolution as this condition has existed since
November and several MS Professionals have given up and no longer contact me
with suggestions, or ignored.

Thanks for your reply.

Stan
