No repro here on all the issues you've mentioned. Please try reinstalling
KB905915 while *no* AntiVirus software is running in the background.
Another source of glitches are extensions (plugins/add-ons) you may have
installed for IE. Deactivating them via "Tools | Add-Ons" may be a good
idea.

This is not a virus / malware issue:

* A full virus scan with a fully up-to-date copy of Sophos AntiVirus
5.1.1 found nothing.
* MS AntiSpyware Beta is installed and running, and a full system scan
found nothing.
* A full scan with an up-to-date copy AdAware SE found nothing.
* I have disabled third party browser extensions.
* I have reviewed the list of IE add-ons, and there is nothing
unexpected.
* Reinstalling the patch with anti-virus and anti-spyware software
turned off made no difference.

Further to my previous post, when IE hangs, the requested URL opens in
a second browser window after several minutes, and the first browser
window becomes responsive again.

In the hung state, there are 4 threads running. The stack trace for all
threads (using SysInternals Process Explorer) ends with:

ntoskrnl.exe!ExReleaseResourceLite+0x2b4
ntoskrnl.exe!IoPageRead+0x892
ntoskrnl.exe!IoGetBaseFileSystemDeviceObject+0x730

I can post the full stack trace if needed.

That's not what I intended with my posting asking for any AV software
running in the background. It wouldn't be the first installation of
an update that "fails" (= showing some quirks) *because* the AV scanner
has not been disabled completly *before* installing the update.

Which are? List them all, please.

Hm, which Windows version are you on?

Is IE the standard browser?

Could you verify the file versions on your system are identical to
the ones listed in the Security Bulletin?

All of the problems I was seeing were caused by a registry key created
by IE7 Beta 1, which I ran in side-by-side mode several months ago.
Deleting the registry key has resolved all of the issues.

You really should mention any "anormalies" on your system next time
while asking for help. No offense, just a note.

I couldn't find a IE7 Beta1 (side-by-side)installation mentioned in this
article anywhere. Did you? <g,d&r>
