re:microsoft works

i recently sent a file via yahoo messenger and yahoo mail, on both counts the
person the other end could not open it, it has not happened before, can
anyone advise why this should suddenly happen,i have not tried a database or
excel file yet so dont know if thats the same, wordpad also will not open at
the receiving end.

How does this apply to windows update?
