I need to do this same type migration, my question is if I can bring new 2008
server into 2000 domain (only 1 server in domain) and not make it DC for a
period of few weeks. After time period I intend to promote 2008 server and
retire 2000 server.

Hello reddawn,

2008 servers can run as member server in 2000 domain. Keep in mind that on
2008 the firewall is activated by default.

For upgrading the domain to 2008 see also here:
http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/l.../cc731188.aspx
