What documentation are you following? iirc, the replication should take
all of 15 minutes, 30 max. Something is really out of whack here.
This should be as easy as introducing the Server 2008 into the domain, waiting
for replication, transfer the roles, or alternately remove the 2003, seize
the roles, and done.
