Greetings,
Yes you can and you don't even need to close Messenger to do it. To do so, click Start, then
Run, type:
%userprofile%\Local Settings\Application Data\Microsoft\Messenger
and click OK. Note if you're not using the English version of Windows, just type
%userprofile% and navigate up to the equivalents in your language.
Also note that these instructions are for XP, if you're using Vista it's the same process,
just that the menus will be hidden and dialogs will be a bit different.
Then open the folder corresponding to your e-mail address, then the ObjectStore folder within
that, right-click the UserTile folder and rename it to "Old UserTile". Next, in Messenger
click the Tools menu (or press ALT-T), then choose Change display picture. The default
display pictures will now appear.
Now, go back to the ObjectStore folder and a new UserTile folder should be there (if not,
press F5 to see it). Now, go into the Old UserTile folder, click the Edit menu, then Select
All, then click Edit again and finally choose Cut. Click back and go into the UserTile
folder. Choose the Edit menu here and choose Paste. You'll probably get a Confirm File
Replace dialog, hold down the shift key and click No (this means No to all).
After that, go back into Messenger, choose Tools (or Alt-T), then Change display picture and
you should have all your existing display pictures, including the defaults.
