Third-party screensaver - no, it's the built-in one. I have no need
for gimmicks; I just use it to make sure the screen is locked when I'm
away.
A third-party Windows Theme - again, no, I have no need for gimmicks.
I think of computers as tools, not toys. (Actually I'm not using a
theme at all, unless Windows's default appearance is considered a
theme.)
The problem with KB916256 (clean boot) is that because the problem is
intermittent, I can't count on it giving me an answer at all.
For example, suppose I do a clean boot, wait for the screen saver to
kick in, and establish that there is no problem. Then I start adding
drivers. At some point the screen saver does not kick in. That
doesn't tell me that the last driver I added is the problem! It
merely tells me that some one of the drivers I have added is the
problem, and the problem, always intermittent, has just decided to
show up.
Now I must repeat the process in a different order to try to eliminate
some of the remaining suspects. Eventually I might narrow the list of
suspects down to one.
Or I might not. Maybe the problem has to do with an application, or a
combination of a driver and an application, and unless I test each
configuration for a period time with my real work load, the problem
will never show up. And since running without drivers disables
functionality, some such tests would be impractical, or even
impossible.
This approach is more trouble than solving the problem is worth. If I
ever find an efficient way to identify the culprit I'll revisit the
issue. If not, I can live with it.
Running a thorough scan for spyware scan is worthwhile for its own
sake, and I'm going to do that. I have done it before, but not for
over a year. I'll report back if it turns up anything significant.
Thanks for your assistance. I'm sorry it didn't lead to a successful
conclusion.
