Yes, it's the "Microsoft Wireless IntelliMouse Explorer 2.0."

[To keep track of things, it helps immensely if you include all of previous
message(s) in your replies to the newsgroup. Thank you.]

Is CyberLink PowerDVD software or the CyberLink PowerCinema software also
installed?

Is it a Dell machine and are the PCM and DVDLauncher services configured to
run in the background?

Was the wireless mouse in use when you visited Windows Update and didn't
find Microsoft HID Non-User Input Data Filter listed in the Optional
Hardware Updates?

[The original message concerned an update titled "Microsoft HID
Non-User Input Data Filter." I was advised to install it to correct a
screen saver problem, but the update service did not offer it.]

Is CyberLink PowerDVD or PowerCinema installed - no.

Is it a Dell machine - no. It's a home built machine with an ASUS
motherboard.

....are PCM and DVDLauncher configured to run in the background - I
assume you mean, to run as services. They are not. (There are no files
named PCM.exe or DVDLauncher.exe on the system.)

Was the wireless mouse in use when you visited Windows Update - yes.

Your thread in WinXP General:
http://groups.google.com/group/micro...4b8f9a7a74ff14

Your replies tell me that the machine does not meet the conditions spelled
out in the KB article in order to have WU offer you the update (& you seem
to have come to the same conclusion in your second post to the above
thread)...and I'd hazard to guess that it wouldn't correct your problem,
even if you could install it. Sorry.

Is it a third-party (i.e., not WinXP default) screensaver? Do you see the
same behavior using one of WinXP's default screensavers? Are you using a
third-party (i.e., non-MS) Windows Theme?

I'd give http://support.microsoft.com/kb/916256 another shot, myself.

Start with Clean Boot troubleshooting
(http://support.microsoft.com/kb/310353/). Basically, disable all non-MS
module from loading at boot. If all is well, add back one module at a time
& reboot; repeat until you find the troublemaker.

NB: Getting a clean bill of health from Ad-Aware SE v1.06 [1], fully
updated, does NOT mean the machine is free of all hijackware!
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Run a /thorough/ check for hijackware, including posting your hijackthis log
to an appropriate forum.
When all else fails, HijackThis v1.99.1
(http://aumha.org/downloads/hijackthis.zip) is the preferred tool to use.
It will help you to both identify and remove any hijackware/spyware with
assistance from an expert. **Post your log to
http://forums.subratam.org/index.php?showforum=7,
http://aumha.net/viewforum.php?f=30, or other appropriate forums for expert
analysis, not here.**
If the procedures look too complex - and there is no shame in admitting this
isn't your cup of tea - take the machine to a local, reputable and
independent (i.e., not BigBoxStoreUSA) computer repair shop.
Third-party screensaver - no, it's the built-in one. I have no need
for gimmicks; I just use it to make sure the screen is locked when I'm
away.
A third-party Windows Theme - again, no, I have no need for gimmicks.
I think of computers as tools, not toys. (Actually I'm not using a
theme at all, unless Windows's default appearance is considered a
theme.)
The problem with KB916256 (clean boot) is that because the problem is
intermittent, I can't count on it giving me an answer at all.
For example, suppose I do a clean boot, wait for the screen saver to
kick in, and establish that there is no problem. Then I start adding
drivers. At some point the screen saver does not kick in. That
doesn't tell me that the last driver I added is the problem! It
merely tells me that some one of the drivers I have added is the
problem, and the problem, always intermittent, has just decided to
show up.
Now I must repeat the process in a different order to try to eliminate
some of the remaining suspects. Eventually I might narrow the list of
suspects down to one.
Or I might not. Maybe the problem has to do with an application, or a
combination of a driver and an application, and unless I test each
configuration for a period time with my real work load, the problem
will never show up. And since running without drivers disables
functionality, some such tests would be impractical, or even
impossible.
This approach is more trouble than solving the problem is worth. If I
ever find an efficient way to identify the culprit I'll revisit the
issue. If not, I can live with it.
Running a thorough scan for spyware scan is worthwhile for its own
sake, and I'm going to do that. I have done it before, but not for
over a year. I'll report back if it turns up anything significant.
Thanks for your assistance. I'm sorry it didn't lead to a successful
conclusion.
