Jay,

One assumes that the update was installed from a server location. If so,
then review the Sec Bulletin. Under General Information click the
plus sign next to Security Update Information, then the plus sign next
to Excel 2003, then the Administrative Installation Information
link.
http://www.microsoft.com/technet/sec.../MS06-059.mspx
FWIW, under the " Prerequisites and Additional Update Details " heading
it states

> Removal Information
>
> To remove this security update, use Add or Remove Programs in Control Panel.

So if the update is not listed in ARP it did not install correctly.
You could check the affected workstations to see if a
$NtUninstallKB923088$ folder is present in the %windir%. If so, open it,
then open the spuninst folder, and run spuninst.exe to manually remove
the update.
As to why the update failed to install correctly, there *should* also be
a KB923088.log located in %windir% that may contain pertinent error
messages.

Ah, another *3rd party* "firewall" that causes issues with Windows.
Combine those "firewalls" with "added" security features of so-called
"Security Suites" and it's a wonder WU/MU functions at all, let alone
the OS.
Maybe one day the "security suites" will learn how Windows functions.
Glad to hear you've got the issue resolved, Jay. Nice work !
