I also have a similar problem but it only affects Update for Office 2003
(KB919029). I've looked all over for solutions but so far no luck. Almost
enough to make one turn off Auto Updates just to get rid of that stinking
shield in the systray.

Maybe the following; as supplied by MS Tech.

Reinstall MSXML 4.00 sp2

http://download.microsoft.com/downlo...ac-7...9561629

2. When the File Download window appears, please click the Save button, and
follow the directions to save it to the Desktop.
3. After downloading this file, please double-click the "msxml.msi" file on
the Desktop. Then the installation will be performed automatically.
4. If you receive three options "Modify", "Repair", and "Remove", please
click "Remove" and follow the instructions to remove MSXML 4.0 Service Pack
2.

5. After removing it, please double-click "msxml.msi" file again, click
"Install Now" button, and then follow the instructions.

After reinstalling MSXML 4.0 Service Pack 2, please move on to step 2 to
install the update KB927978.

Step 2: Reinstall MSXML 4.0 SP2 Security Update (KB927978)
============================================
1. Please download the update from the following link:

http://download.microsoft.com/downlo...d9-3...0130141

2. When the File Download window appears, please click the Save button, and
follow the directions to save it to the Desktop.
3. After downloading this file, please double-click the
"msxml4-KB927978-enu.exe" file on the Desktop. Then the installation will be
performed automatically.

4. After finishing the above steps, please check the result on the Windows
Update website again.

What page are you referring to?
Perhaps you should read: http://www.dts-l.org/goodpost.htm

If you provide more details, perhaps you will get assistance.

I'd suggest lowering yourself from that high horse you've mounted Taur and quit being so darn patronizing.

Quite obvious I should say...the links posted above: MSXML 4.00 sp2 and the update are both void, they're too long for the message board.

I do not post to a "forum". The links referred to were not in the message. I do not use a
"web based client" to post.
The subject line had changed.

The person who posted the links should have checked the same.

Presumably after checking your "eggheadcafe.com" forum - these are the links in question -

or http://tinyurl.com/3jo3r

Perhaps it would be better to post directly to the WU Newsgroup at MS.

I was also stuck in the update hell mentioned above. It has to do with some "side-by-side" installation of msxml4.

Yes, the links in the previous comments are both useless due to the length. So, I've made a tinyurl link to the webpage and file that needs to be downloaded (both microsoft)...
http://tinyurl.com/ygbwkk
or to go directly to the download file...
http://tinyurl.com/yx4otu

After you run this file you should have several options. Press the one that says "remove". Then run the .exe again and select "install". If you check your ...\windows\system32 directory you should find msxml4.dll dated 11/4/2006.

I think I've finally been set free from update hell! (well at least for update KB927978.)
