Because the update is reinstalling itself every day.
Is KB952672 listed in Add/Remove Programs under
Windows XP - Software Updates ?
Is KB927978 listed by itself as MSXML 4.0 SP2 (KB952672) ?

You can delete the random named folders that contain the
msxml4-KB927978-enu.logs. They are generated during the failed
installations.
