That is usually a symptom that you have downloaded the wrong version.
E.g. trying to install the version for the 64-bit version of Windows
on a Win32 workstation would cause that symptom.

BTW once update notification is made and an update is delivered
WU's job is essentially done. You would probably get better help
from a newsgroup which specialized in the product being updated
if you are having problems with just an install, particularly an install
for a manual download.

Good luck

Ok. Well, first of all your headers show that you are using Outlook
Express as your newsreader; so that's good but your Message-ID
shows that you are using what is probably your ISP's news server;
so that's probably why the number of newsgroups seems so
overwhelming to you--you are looking at all of USENET. Instead,
try clicking on this link to see only the news groups that Microsoft
hosts:

news://msnews.microsoft.com/

That is a link which OE understands but which is non-standard.
Other newsreaders would have to extract the site name from
that link and use it in their UI appropriately.

OE creates a new news account for you and (IIRC) lets you see
the list of newsgroups that server hosts. It may take a few moments
to download the list but it is a much smaller list than the one you are
currently using.

After that once you are in the account you can open the list with Ctrl-w
and it looks as if all you need to type to see the English newsgroups
which specialize in .Net is public.dotnet (or minimally c.dot)

However, before posting to one of those it would probably be a good
idea to find out where install problems have been discussed.
You could use Google Groups or the Microsoft Communities
web interface to newsgroups to search old posts. Also, to "cut through
the chaff" to answers instead of others' questions I suggest appending
the expression MSFT OR MVP to your queries.

<
http://groups.google.com/groups?num=...t*&btnG=Search >

(Google Groups search for
dotnetfx MSFT OR MVP group:microsoft.*.dotnet*
- sorted by date to try to capture current thinking
)

Hence, you can see that
microsoft.public.dotnet.framework.setup

is the most popular place to discuss that topic.

You can do a similar search on the Microsoft Communities web interface
except that it does not treat the Boolean expression MSFT OR MVP
as an alternation so you would have to break that up into two searches.

http://msdn.microsoft.com/newsgroups...xp=&sloc=en-us

(Search in Microsoft .Net Development newsgroups for
dotnetfx MVP
)

Hint: there is an [INFO] post from MVP Patrick Philippot
there which you may be interested in reading...
