Hello Richard,
Depending on how you have Automatic Windows Update setup, Vista may
have been installing and updating your metwork adapter drivers at the
time. If you had just started Vista, then it may take a few seconds to
initialize the network device and establish a connection. If you have
timed out on the network, then it may take a second to reconnect when
you are active again causing what you have seen to.
