It's more likely that something went awry during the "update" you completed
"last night".
Where did you obtain the "updates" and what were they for?
What make and model is your laptop?
That aside, a web search for a reputable free antivirus program is not to
difficult.
Such things as Zone Alarm, Spy bot SD, and AVG antivirus (free edition) can
be useful. However, running multiple firewalls and antivirus programs
simultaneously is not a good idea. Registry "cleaning" programs will likely
cause more harm than good if used on vista.
Vista has a built in "firewall". I suspect your complaint concerning
subscriptions is based upon a software suite (you didn't identify it) that
was installed originally by the laptop OEM.
