Free unlimited installation and compatibility support is available for
Windows XP, but only for Service Pack 3 (SP3) and *only until* 14 Apr-09.
Go to http://support.microsoft.com/oas/def...spx?gprid=1173 | Select
"Windows XP Service Pack 3"

=> Did you select "Windows XP Service Pack 3"??

In case others didn't know, full Win XP support, in general, dies on April
14, 2009. That means no further major releases for Messenger, Defender, WMP
and IE9 [I guess IE8 will be out before then]. As well, no minor updates and
telephone support changes as well.

I guess perfect timing for MS as they'll switch those support techies over
to Win 7.

Well, WinXP SP2 on 13 July 2010, yes. Extended Support for WinXP SP3,
including security updates, continues until 2014. cf.
http://www.microsoft.com/windows/lifecycle/default.mspx &ff

A bit of clarrification then.

As of April 14, 2009, there will be only security updates.
As of July 13, 2010, no more security updates for SP2.
As of April 8, 2014, all support for win XP dies.
