this will fix it if not email me for the long fix.
start - run - "net stop wuauserv" <enter>
delete the folder wuredir found in C:\windows\software distribution (or
rename it wuredir.old) start - run -"net start wuauserv" <enter>
reboot and update.

Dear MudSud:

I was having the same problem with this error message after I reloaded some
programs and did a system restore. Your directions cleared up the problem
immediately.
Thank you!!! Thank you!!!

Thank you mudsud it worked for me. The only thing I noticed is that update
does not have my complete installation history now but it got rid of the
error message.

Dear MudSud:

I wonder if I might pick your brain for another related problem. When I go
to the Microsoft home page and click on Office Updates for XP I receive I
message that says "Office update is unable to check for updates" and then
gives a bunch of reasons why this might be the case. After reviewing the
information, it's still not clear how to resolve this problem. Can you offer
some advice?

Thanks in advance for any help
