Click Start, Settings, Control Panel, System, Hardware tab, Device Manager.
Expand "Sound, Video, and Game Controllers" and double-click the AC'97 enrty.
Click the "Driver" tab, click the "Update Driver" button. That brings up the Update Wizard.
Check the box, "Install from a list or spacific location (Advanced), click "Next"
Check the box, "Don't search. I will choose the driver to install", click "Next"
Check the box, "Show compatable Hardware"
There should be TWO possibilities there:
AC'97 Codec Combo Driver (WDM)
AC'97 Enhanced Audio Controller. (This one is probably highlighted already)
Select the AC'97 Codec Combo Driver (WDM and "Next" your way out of the Update Wizard, reboot.
If it's not named that, pick ANYTHING but the "AC'97 Enhanced Audio Controller". That's the one
that caused all the problems to start with.
