Same happened to me, on two machines. Now Windows Update manually
tells me there are no critical updates I need. The write-up for 834707
seems to suggest that it isn't needed if you have SP2. Perhaps it was
a false alarm? It would be nice to have better feedback though, so
that we don't all waste time worrying about a problem that may not
exist.

Curiously, this morning the Windows Update icon appeared again and
told me that it was downloading an update. It transpired it was the
update I'd told it to download a couple of days ago. Perhaps the
server was busy and it decided to try again later, or perhaps there
was some other reason. More information would be nice.

Anyway, I managed to grab the update file from the download folder so
now I've updated all three of my XP systems.
