You're expecting webmail.company.com to resolve to
webmail.company.com.domainname.com?

I suspect that your problem is simply that NSLookup is appending the
primary DNS Suffix to the webmail query while Ping / the DNS Client is not.

It is possible to make the client append the suffix. Is that what you
want to do?
