No, you're SOL when it comes to checking for updates. However, all
previously released updates for Office 2000 (no longer supported) are
available for download here: http://catalog.update.microsoft.com/

Hi PA Bear,

I just tried that link and it downloaded an ActiveX control and then was
redirected to an error message here:
http://catalog.update.microsoft.com/...id=-1914896352.
Please help.

Also, does this automate the process of installing all the updates SP3 and
later? If not, does MS offer a CD with all of them?

Thanks, Fred

Well, I know that Microsoft's servers have been having a boatload of
problems since the 29th so what you're seeing might be related. Judging
from the problem I've encountered at other MS websites since then, I don't
think they've got the problems sorted quite yet.

cf.
http://blogs.technet.com/msonline/ar...ty-issues.aspx

In the meantime, see if you can find & download the updates one-at-a-time
via the Download Center: http://www.microsoft.com/downloads

Nothing about the Microsoft Update Catalog is automatic, Fred. Think of it
as a download manager of sorts, allowing you to download multiple updates
(files) in one go-round. If you're referring to Office 2000 SP3, I can
assure you that it's not and never has been available on CD (at least to the
general public).

Which link? Two were given. FWIW both worked for me.

Oh. Are you talking about this link?

http://catalog.update.microsoft.com/

FWIW I have a new machine and don't yet have the ActiveX control it wants me
to install, so I am getting a prompt to install it (as expected)...
And that worked too.

However, on another machine I did encounter a problem with that app and
discovered a workaround...

<quote>
Disabling the control didn't help. Disabling Scripting changed the symptom
but didn't help. Only removing the old ActiveX control worked and then
only after starting from the beginning again.

Robert,

What is the name of the old ActiveX control? The one to remove.

Well, I just answered my own question. It's named Microsoft Update Catalog.
Removing that gets me a little further, but it hangs after I click the info
bar to install the (presumed) new one.

Maybe you'll have better luck than me trying to report it using that
feedback link they provide. <eg>

Can you reach http://www.microsoft.com/downloads?

How about http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com or
http://update.microsoft.com/microsoftupdate ??

Are you running IE6, IE7, or IE8 on your WinXP SP3 computer?

What anti-virus application or security suite is installed and is your
subscription current? What anti-spyware applications (other than Defender)?
What third-party firewall (if any)?

Has a(another) Norton or McAfee application ever been installed on the
computer (e.g., a free-trial version that came preinstalled when you bought
it)?

I can reach all 3 of the websites that you mentioned. They don't, however,
offer an automated way to get Office 2000 updates.

WinXP SP3 with IE8.

Norton Internet Security 2010 and it is current. No anti-spyware. I'm
using NIS' firewall.

No other Norton or McAfee applications were ever installed.

Have you been able to access http://catalog.update.microsoft.com/ yourself?

With the demise of Office Update website in Aug-09, there is no automated
way to update Office 2000. I never said or implied that you'd be able to
update Office 2000 via Microsoft Update Catalog (vs Microsoft Update
website) or the Download Center.

Yes, I've always been able to access that page.

NIS 2010 only became available a few months ago. I assume you upgraded to
NIS 2010 from, e.g., NIS 2009, yes?

Were all NIS processes running in the background when you installed IE8
and/or SP3?
