Nope system restore won't help because I don't have a restore point before
this error started. I have been asking since last week for help.

Then I suggest you use the Help and Support option and do an Online
Assistance to an MS Vista Tech.
They usually reply within 0ne day.

If you have an actual Vista DVD you could do a reinstall into the same
directory Vista is installed in now.

I don't have a vista dvd only the 6 cd's that you burn for the laptop. It's
all the original settings and software that came with the laptop.

I already don't help and support and did searches

to the best of my knowledge Email support is still free........I have used
it on numerous occasions...twice for Vista...and have never paid.
I have only had to use phone support once at the beginning of XP...they were
polite, courteous and gave me the right answer. Email support usually takes
12 hours to reply but again they wanted to be sure that I understood the
solution and followed up to make sure it worked...and they typed in English.

Peter I know the email support should be free but it's telling me my Product
ID is invalid. I know the product key and the product ID are two different
numbers so I'm not getting confused with the numbers.

I have an Acer Travelmate laptop preinstalled with Vista Home basic. 160GB
Harddrive and 1Gb RAM , have no idea what the motherboard is or what cheap
graphics card they have in there.

Oh God!!......sorry I also have an Acer that came with XP and qualified for
the "free" VistaPremiumUpgrade and had a slight Vista problem with it.I
finally just got ****ed off and redid the damn thing. If you can still
access the OS I would suggest you save all of your work and then do a
Restore to when 1st bought.
Might I also suggest what I did...I went and bought an External Hard Drive
and Enclosure that connects via USB and the Program Acronis True Image.
With it I created an Emergency Boot Disk and then Imaged the Acer HD to the
External HD. I do this about every 3 days.
The Boot disk will start the system running Acronis and from there you can
restore the Image back to the original HD.
The program will also Image to DVD ....or back up incrementally to DVD.

This has ...so far...saved my bacon once.
I wish you luck..but if it was me I'd wipe it and reinstall
