> New machine with WinXP SP3 installed.

Explain, please. Is this a brand-new machine or is it just new for you?
Was SP3 installed when you purchased it? Had WinXP been reinstalled and
then SP3 installed?

What do the most recent entries (start at the bottom and scroll up) in
WindowsUpdate.log have to say about all this? (See #3 below)

How to troubleshoot Windows Update, Microsoft Update, and Windows Server
Update Services installation issues:
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/906602

1. See the "Need more help? Tell us what problem you are having" section of
http://support.microsoft.com/ph/6527

2. You cannot install some updates or programs
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/822798

3a. Check your WindowsUpdate.log (%windir%\WindowsUpdate.log) for errors
associated with the download/install.

3b. Compare errors to those listed here:

link in left pane > Solve problems on your own.

"Update is not allowed to download due to regulation" errors translate to
"Server busy; Automatic Updates will try again later."

The above notwithstanding, CrystalBall© sez...

Updates are not installed successfully from Windows Update, from Microsoft
Update, or by using Automatic Updates after you repair a Windows XP
installation:
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/943144

NB: Also applies to clean installs, upgrade installs, and Recovery installs.

PS: Where did you get the WinXP CD that "included SP3"? Was SP3
slipstreamed onto the CD?

Rats, except that 5 or 6 updates have installed correctly.

The "Windows Malicious Software Removal Tool - July 2008 (KB890830)"
update has JUST arrived. This time I got the Automatic Updates alert
instead of the install and shutdown.

The CD is an OEM from a local shop. It looks genuine with smart, full
coverage bronze hologram on front etc, and the fancy sticky label with
holes and silver strip.

Well, if WindowsUpdate.log continues to show those "...due to regulation"
errors, the problem's not on your end.

You may want to reconfigure your Automatic Updates settings (e.g., to Notify
Only):

How to configure and use Automatic Updates in WinXP:
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/306525

Dunno how legal that CD is... <shrug>

YW but it doesn't matter what it looks like. A stolen '08 Honda looks like
the one of many pictures but it's still illegal to own it, no matter who you
bought it from.
