Perhaps you're using the wrong URL?

http://www.google.com.au/search?hl=e...diffmail&meta=

BTW, what Windows Update caused this problem???

I'm having similar problems. In my case, the error number given is
0x80240030, and the error message is:
"The website has encountered a problem and cannot display the page you are
trying to view..."

I'm running Windows XP.

Anyone got any ideas about what the problem might be?

P.S. I also note that discussion group messages don't seem to be displayed in
the pane on the right, although (as you can see), it's possible for me to
find out what the messages say by double-clicking on them, and getting them
on a separately-opened page.

(poster is using some kind of web interface to newsgroups)

If you are just looking at the message list that would be true.
You could then open the first message in that thread by singleclicking
on the subject (e.g. changing the [+] to [-] and listing the rest of the
thread in the message list.)

Yes. That is called a thread view. All the messages in the thread
are then opened in one window. This is actually a little known feature
of the web interface to newsgroups that you are using.

BTW this doesn't have anything to do with WU either. ; )

But as for your "similar problems" which clearly have nothing to do
with the off-topic information provided by the OP (opening post)
of this thread, have you tried doing a search with the error code
that you mentioned? E.g. press Alt-7 and enter it... ; )

Evidently this is such a FAQ that you can even use the filters (Show:
dropdown menu) although often that is not the most effective way
of filtering in threads which could have answers. E.g. if there aren't
any obviously helpful posts easily found using the filters you are
usually better off doing another search which adds MVP or MSFT
to your search terms.
