First, I would like to say this is the Active Directory newsgroup. A
question about Windows updates are better suited for the Windows Update
newsgroup, which can be found at microsoft.public.windowsupdate, whch I've
cross-posted for you with this response. You can check back here for
responses from this group or the Update group.
No one is bound to accept or install updates. There are no strong arm or
scare tactics. Even still, what's the gain or purpose? If your mechanic said
it's been 15,000 miles since your last oil change, and you really do need
one now, probably at least 10,000 miles ago, does that mean he's simply
trying to make money off of you?
Many operating system vulnerabilities are discovered frequently, and not
just with WIndows. Hotfixes and updates are designed to protect against
these new findings. It's up to you if you feel that you are protected from
these vulnerabilities with a stock build.
As for automatic updates restarting your machine, you can simply choose to
download new updates and let you choose if and when to install them (the
setting directly below Automatic updates), and simply ignore the Security
center warnings. This is how I have my personal workstations set. For my
customers, I use WSUS, controlling what gets installed and when.
It's up to you.
