Update:
Prior to finding my own solution, I had spent some time chatting with HP
Support and was disconnected from the chat after I was told "since an
application (Screensaver in this case) has already started and is running,
the Computer is not in the idle mode anymore and so the Monitor will not shut
off as it hasn't reached the 5 minutes idle time required for the Monitor to
shut off..." and I responded with that that's not how a screensaver is
supposed to work.
I received an email from HP Total Care, after an hour or so, that stated the
following:
"However, you can perform the following steps to isolate the issue:
1. Click on Start->type msconfig in Run command and press enter.
Unchecking ehtray fixed my problem. ehtray.exe is , tray bar process for
Microsoft Media center.. <==== possible fix
And Uncheck "DSagent" as posted is Dell support. <===== hmmmm
Restart the Notebook.
Please get back to us if the issue persists."
I didn't attempt this fix as I had already installed Google's screensaver to
give the client the capabilities that he desired. He had purchased this
computer mostly for being able to display a slide show of his pictures and
wanted the screen saver to do this also.
This may be another fix for this problem and I also read about installing
the My Pictures screen saver from XP on a Vista machine, which may work also.
And things that make you go hmmm- are HP technicians using Dell computers?
