Split DNS is when you company provides a one dns for internal clients and
another for external clients. So from the outside you access your company
via
http://url.company.com and this gets you to their external address of
http://aaa.bbb.ccc.ddd well with split dns when you access
http://url.company.com from inside their network you get to the internal
address
http://abc.def.ghi.jkl
Usually if a company doesn't do split dns then a host file works just as
well, plus you can try the host file without bothering anyone in IT.
