My 3 year old Dell D510 cheapo laptop runs better with Vista than XP. I
has a Pentium M 1.73 Ghz single core CPU and 2 Gigs of RAM. I notice
the improvement immediately after installing the Vista upgrade. I wa
kind of nervous about the upgrade and thought it would be crippled b
Vista. I guess it had new enough architecture to absorb Vista withou
ANY problems. I upgraded this laptop about 10 months ago

I'd say you had a bad XP install, or something running that was slowing it
down.
I have never seen Vista run faster than XP on the same hardware...Even on my
Q6600/4GB/512MB PCIe/2x500GB SATA
