Hello Kathy,

That isn't a bug, with ADMT v3 the DCLocator service is used to choose one
available DC. See here about it:

OK..there are few things here:

1. DCLocator Process - In this process, the ADMT server will first search
DNS for a site specific DC & or GC records and ONLY if it doesn't find a DC
& or GC record, the DCLocator will perform a domain based query. If thats
true, then the ADMT Server should always get connected to the DC and or GC
which is in the same AD Site as the ADMT Server??

2. Are you saying that mentioning the \\Source Domain DC and \\Target Domain
DC on the Domain Selection page in ADMT 3.0 doesn't work?

3.Can it also happen that after a migration session, the admt log files
shows \\xyc source domain server and \\abc target domain server as being
used for migration , however under the hood ADMT may be communicating with
\\MNO source domain server and \\CDE target domain server?

Also, can you let me know why the ADMT server communicates with a GC? I
would guess for checking group memberships, to check unqiue UPN names in
target domain...

Hello Kathy,

Sorry for being so late.

1. Yes it should, if all preconditions are set as described with the patches
and registry changes in the 3 articles from Jorge.

2. No, it works but you can not configure the "Preferred domain contoller",
this is new functionality with ADMTv3.1 "To use a preferred domain controller,
you must configure it by using the admt config command-line option. You must
configure source and target domain controllers independently. After you configure
a preferred domain controller, ADMT determines its validity and availability
and uses it automatically every time that you run ADMT" page 211 ADMTv3.1
guide

3. The logfile should display the used DC's, not another.

Global catalog is used because of this:
The Active Directory Migration Tool (ADMT) changes global groups to universal
groups when you migrate them from the source domain to the target domain.
The change occurs automatically because global groups can contain only members
of their own domain. Therefore, they cannot continue to be global groups
when they are migrated to another domain until the group members are migrated.
ADMT changes the universal groups back to global groups when the last member
of the group is migrated to the target domain. Because universal groups replicate
their membership to the global catalog, it is important to verify that the
universal groups correctly changed back to global groups

Best regards
