Some log files you can check for any clues or error messages:
%windir%\Svcpack.log
%windir%\setupapi.log
(%windir% is typically C:\Windows)
It could be caused by Spyware or Parasites that kills update.exe
To check for Spyware and Parasites, you can run e.g. the
