Manually syncing works in 2011(Vista/Win7) and 2009(XPSp3) on my end when I
click Sync(2009) or Send/Receive(2011) -> 'All Newsgroups'
Uncheck
- Check for new messages every 'x' minutes (options Read tab)

Configure the newsgroup(rt click) and set Syncrhonization to 'New Messages'

Never underestimate the most important part of the WLM name...that 'L'
stands for 'Live' and it will continue to take precedent as the focal point
and future direction as it has since 2007(the first release of WLM/Windows
'Live' Essentials). WLM's is first and foremost an email client that
integrates with the other Essential applications and their integrated
features while using a Live ID to sign on to Windows Live. Likewise, it is
first and foremost a client for use with Hotmail accounts(hotmail.com,
live.com, mns.com) using the DeltaSync protocol. Everything else is
secondary(pop3, imap, news) with newsgroups at best way down the priority
list....with Msft shutting down their nntp/news server this past fall focus
towards newsgroups may not even be on the list now or ever again.

Have a plan for the future...while version 2009 on XP(or any o/s) is
classified as being 'supported for the foreseeable future' it may not
necessarily mean until the end of XP's extended support lifecycle(April
2014) or in perpetuity. Since WLM is integrated with WLMsgr any security
issues impacting the latter(which has happened in the past with earlier
version of Messenger no longer capable of logging on) could very well
impact both thus having alternative options for the future(upgrading to
Win7 with WLM 2011 or a third party email/news client) might be worthy of
investigation.

I've been trying out WLM (ver. 2009) for XP (sp 3) & have noticed that it
doesn't automatically poll newsgroup messages even though I have added a
tick in the relevant place under the news account, all settings (WLM is set
to default & have changed the file type to open using WLM) are correct -
using the exact same ones with OE gives no problems, manually syncing
downloads the messages but would prefer to download them along with the
email. Is there anything which I could check or change to allow this to
happen?

Thanks in advance.
Time Lady.

Was that Version 3? I had similar feelings having used v2, but v3 is
much improved, IMO. If v3, what was it that you disliked?

WLM 2011 meets my usage pattern.

I'm not suggesting anything..just don't get too dependent on a prior
version(s) when new versions or QFE updates are released espcially if
WLMsgr is in use on the same system as WLM since required WLMsgr updates
also update WLM due to integration.

What would you suggest for news?
I tried & didn't like Tbird.

FWIW, Tbird v3 was released in December 2009, so it's possible you
looked at v2. Unless you need razzle-dazzle binary support, v3 is a much
better nntp client that WLM 2011 IMO.

If you're content with WLM 2009, it's probably not worth the transition
(I just did that) unless there are other considerations. For me, I can
now sync my Google contacts with my Tbird address book... so I no longer
have to keep WLM and Google contacts paired manually.

Merry Christmas!

Well, my suggestion may not be worth much for you Young Turks, who think
that "The Web", and HTML, are all there is to the Internet. But I only use
WLM for its support of HTTPMail access to my Hotmail accounts. For regular
email I use Pegasus Mail, and for news I use 40tude Dialog.

Thanks, I saw that in a previous posting (likely yours). I guess I'm a
reluctant "cloud guy". I relented w/Google Contacts, yet I'm not fully
trusting of those who will store/sync my mail, files, contacts,
calendar, passwords, financial data... and my social life. That's why
the Tbird extension appealed to me. And now I can delete — is anything
/really/ deleted — my Live contacts.
