Have you tried opening one of them will notepad and see what's in it? What
is the Original Location of the file?

Can you give and exact name?

If your OE is OK (no lost messages), delete the .bak files.

Oh, and delete them with OE closed. They will come back everytime you
compact messages in OE.

I know one of the updates this month was for OE dealing with compacting.
Maybe it is using the recycle bin to backup folders when compacting.

The .bak extension is usually used when creating a 'backup' file in
computereeze. It started with UNIX and I guess Windows is using it (or some
Windows developer that used to program in UNIX is).

I just tested ... yep, after each folder is compacted, the .bak file for
that folder appears.
I guess MS is forcing us now to cleanup the recycle bin without telling us.

Well...I searched my entire computer to see if there were any other places
where *.bak files might reside...NOPE....so that must be what is going
on.....I'm a neat freak anyway...so empty the recycle bin very
frequently....thanks for the reply...it's helpful. It's weird though...why
create a file for backup only to throw it out?.....

You can save them elsewhere but I recommend that you save your message
store from time to time or use a back up program like the one here:

http://www.oehelp.com/oebackup/default.aspx

The good thing about the update is that is sets the count back to zero.
Previously, every time you closed OE 100 times, a pop up would appear
asking you if you want to compact your messages. This method created
problems and was a nuisance.

Regardless of the update "back up", I always back up with a similar
program to the above before compacting because if the lights should go
off while you're compacting, you can probably say "bye bye" to most, if
not all, of your email messages.

Why would you lose all your email messages if they are in the original in OE
and not just in the recycle bin? And if you have backup power supply, that
should allow compaction to continue shouldn't it?

Yes, and a good idea.
